How does image compression work?

We re-encode your image at a lower quality factor while keeping its pixel dimensions exactly the same. Most photos look visually identical between quality 75 and 95 — the file size difference can be 60-80%. We use mozjpeg for JPEGs (the same encoder Google and Facebook use), which produces 10-20% smaller files than standard JPEG at equivalent quality.

Will my image quality drop?

At quality 75, most product photos are visually indistinguishable from the original at typical viewing sizes. Going below 60 starts producing visible artifacts in detail-heavy areas (jewelry, electronics text, fine fabric weaves). For marketplace primary product images, stay at 80+; for thumbnails or social previews, 60-70 is fine.

Why does my image need compressing for Amazon / Flipkart?

Marketplaces cap upload size: Amazon 10 MB, Flipkart 10 MB, Meesho 5 MB, Myntra 5 MB. Modern phone cameras produce 5-15 MB files routinely, so compression is the difference between "uploads instantly" and "rejected, try again." Compress before resize to keep this in two clean steps.

Can I compress without losing dimensions?

Yes — that's exactly what this tool does. It only changes the encoding quality, not the pixel dimensions. If you also need to change dimensions for marketplace specs, run this through the Marketplace Resize tool afterwards.

Will it strip my EXIF metadata?

Yes, sharp drops EXIF, IPTC, and XMP on re-encode by default. If you specifically want to clean metadata (GPS coordinates, camera fingerprints) and not compress, the Clean EXIF tool re-encodes at maximum quality so file size stays similar.

Does it handle PNG transparency?

Yes. PNGs are compressed using palette quantization (reducing the colour palette to ~256 representative colours) which keeps transparency intact and typically produces 50-70% smaller files. Photos compress better as JPEG than PNG; logos and graphics compress better as PNG.

What about WebP?

WebP is supported on input and output. WebP is 25-35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality and is supported by all modern browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari 14+). Most marketplaces don't accept WebP for product imagery yet — keep JPEG for marketplace uploads, use WebP for your own DTC site.
